When Culture Works!

When Culture WorksEveryone seems to be talking about company culture and core values more than ever in the history of modern business. We talk about why they matter and what it means to hiring, retention, quality of work, cost, and the health of the people and the enterprise. We brag about the goodness of our organizations and all the things we do to promote a culture of inclusion that works toward the well-being of everyone around us.

Most of you who read my articles know that my wife Linda passed away in early November. Like most people in my situation, I spend every day thinking about her while still trying to do a solid day’s work. Today, I want to talk about “Caring” as it fits into work culture.

This week, I was invited to Ft. Lauderdale to join 25-30 MRINetwork folks for a production opportunity focused on the value of our great organization. This organization has been around for over 50 years and we constantly talk about and function like a family. Perhaps it’s because we are. Sometimes all in sync and sometimes a bit dysfunctional. We were there to provide commentary on what we see as the value in our network and the services, support, and opportunity available for those who may want to join us and to remind ourselves what it means to be part of MRINetwork.

Over the last several months and years, I have experienced the true meaning of caring in a business environment. On Wednesday, I tried to express my appreciation to all those who have taken time from their day to simply pick up the phone or send a quick note. I wanted to say thank you for the hugs both physical and virtual. It was my intention to tell the many MRINetwork owners, recruiters, fabulous MRINetwork corporate team, and our tremendous clients how fortunate I am for the opportunity to work with an organization that truly cares. In addition, I wanted my team to know they are part of something special.

As it turned out I failed. When the camera started, I was speechless. Emotions overtook the ability to speak and the tears flowed. At that moment, I rose from where I was sitting and just walked away. I didn’t get very far before I was surrounded by my caring friends, many of whom I have known for nearly 20 years. They were a display of a culture that works. They were there with words of encouragement and total support. The willingness of this wide-spread organization to share and care has been part of the fabric for over 50 years. I am grateful to be so well cared for.

Most of us compete daily in the war for talent. We are all part of this culture and we are family. Whether we agree on all points every day is irrelevant. When it matters, our caring culture comes to the surface and we surround each other with the support necessary to move forward. To all I say, “thank you”!!

Caring comes in a variety of packages. Does your company measure up? Do You?
